Trained as a physicist, Karen is an HPC System and Storage engineer with over 20 years of experience in supporting High Performance Computing clusters.

Hahef Haseem Fatima

Kahefe is an IT professional with 10 years of experience in systems administration, endpoint security, IT service delivery, and user education. She joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2020 and currently serves on the IT Collaboration Services team, supporting staff through Google Workspace services, technical documentation, and training. Her background also includes work with social service organizations such as Larkin Street.

She holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology with a specialization in Cybersecurity. Her doctoral research examined employee behavior and cybersecurity awareness within organizations. She is passionate about making technology accessible through practical guidance that helps people work securely and collaborate effectively.

Tim is a Science IT consultant. Before joining the Lab, he worked in the private sector as a Data Scientist across a variety of industries, including computer vision, people analytics, and casino gaming.

David joined the Lab in 2003 and has been with the Collaboration Services group since 2020. He supports Google Workspace and other applications.

Fengchen, a ScienceIT Consultant, who was a senior AI/ML engineer and a software engineer at Fintech and Insurance companies, and a researcher at UCSF focusing on the Computational Epidemiology.

Dimitry Mishin

ScienceIT Consultant

Dimitry serves as an Infrastructure Architect at the Lab, focusing on the intersection of cloud-native services, automated container orchestration, and high-performance computing. He brings extensive expertise in distributed storage filesystems and production-grade AI platforms. Before his current role, Dmitry was a Principal Systems Engineer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC UCSD), where he architected and scaled the National Research Platform—a massive, federated Kubernetes cluster delivering distributed computing resources to the global scientific community—while simultaneously supporting SDSC’s core HPC environments.

Henrik Norberg

ScienceIT Consultant

Henrik first joined the Lab in 1995 as a visiting researcher in the Nuclear Science Division, where he developed software for visualizing nuclear structure data. In 1997, he transitioned to the Data Management R&D group in the Computer Science Division, focusing on data infrastructure planning for experiments at the LHC at CERN and RHIC. In 1998, Henrik co-founded Jitterbit, a data integration and workflow company, where he served as Chief Software Architect and VP of Engineering for ten years.

Andrew Schmeder

Science IT Consultant

Andrew has been immersed in the world of IT world since he was 13, from crafting intricate text-adventure games in BASIC on his dad’s trusty 8086, to fixing computers for neighborhood businesses, and orchestrating elaborate online pranks to "break" the internet. After earning his Mathematics degree at UC Berkeley, he rode the dot-com wave, building full-stack LAMP apps on the digital frontier. Today, he specializes in helping scientists harness computational power, streamline complex data workflows, and leverage AI inference services, adding rocket fuel to groundbreaking research.

Sapana Soni

Science IT Consultant

Sapana is an HPC User Services Consultant. Prior to joining Berkeley Lab in 2022, she was engaged in postdoctoral research at the University of California Merced and the University of Geneva Switzerland.  She taught an undergraduate-level course on Computational Chemistry at UC Merced and mentored graduate and undergraduate students in using HPC clusters for their research. In her outreach activity as a president of Women in STEM (W-STEM) at UC Merced, she organized career guidance events on traditional and nontraditional career paths in academia and industry. On this platform she enjoyed sharing her experience and encouraging women for career path in STEAM.

She holds a Master’s degree in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry.

Adam Stone

CIO/IT Division Director

Adam is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Information Technology (IT) Division Director at Berkeley Lab. With more than 16 years experience as the Deputy CIO, Adam leads risk-management, cyber security strategy, assurance and compliance, and overall technical strategy in cloud, HPC, collaboration technologies, and data centers. Prior to joining the Lab, Adam spent 8 years as a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory. 

Wei Feinstein

IT Collaboration Services
Group Lead

Wei began her career as a software engineer. She transitioned to HPC during her postdoctoral research on drug-protein interactions. Her two decades of diverse experience in computing across private, academic, and government organizations, combined with executive education at Stanford, have shaped her user-centric, collaborative approach.

Wei holds a master’s degree in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Computational Biology. Wei’s interests include travel, international cuisine, and sports, especially equestrian.

Caitlin Youngquist

Creative Services Manager

Caitlin uses her keen design eye to lead the Creative Services team in providing engaging and impactful visuals that support the lab’s mission. Her focus on streamlining workflows and implementing innovative tools allows CSO to provide the highest standards for the Lab’s visual communications.
